Transportation & Highway Technical Manager – Civil Engineering

Fisher Associates is seeking a Transportation & Highway Technical Manager / Civil Engineer to provide senior-level technical leadership on highway and roadway design projects throughout Upstate New York. This role is ideal for an experienced Civil Engineer or Transportation Engineer who is passionate about transportation infrastructure, roadway design, and mentoring engineering teams.

As a Technical Manager, you will lead hands‑on highway and roadway design, guide engineering staff, and ensure high-quality project delivery for clients including NYSDOT and local municipalities.

What You’ll Do as a Transportation & Highway Technical Manager
  • Deliver transportation projects that improve mobility, safety, and quality of life in local communities.

  • Oversee the design and execution of highway engineering projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and client requirements.
  • Serve as a technical lead, guiding the team on best practices, decisions, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Implement and oversee quality control processes and conduct technical audits to ensure high standards.
  • Maintain effective communication with project managers, clients, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Ensure effective resource allocation, adequate staffing, and utilization to meet project and team goals.
  • Assist in recruiting top engineering talent who align with the team’s technical excellence and company culture.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance team performance.
  • Stay current with transportation design trends and emerging technologies, integrating them into project solutions.
  • Contribute to the organization’s technical strategy and help forecast future technical needs.

Requirements:

What You Bring, Your Expertise as a Transportation & Highway Technical Manager
  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering
  • 8-15 years’ experience in transportation, roadway, or highway engineering
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) or ability to obtain it
  • Prior staff management
  • Proficiency in MS Office;
    Micro Station
  • Familiarity with NYSDOTdesign standards
