Location: City of Albany

Work Location / Arrangement

Hybrid position requiring four days a week of in‑office work at an M&T corporate office in Rochester, NY, Radnor, PA, Springfield, MA, or Boston, MA. Supports the New England Region (Albany, Hudson Valley North, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut) and/or the Delaware Region.

Overview

Member of the Commercial Credit team that partners with senior staff to support underwriting duties and continuous monitoring of a portfolio of credit relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate the credit needs of customers by analyzing new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval and throughout the loan life.
  • Manage ongoing credit risk through continuous monitoring (CCM) activities such as annual reviews, interim update memos, covenant monitoring, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other surveillance.
  • Review all pertinent credit and financial information: statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal data, industry research, and peer data.
  • Determine the need for more thorough investigation or additional information.
  • Analyze financial information and related materials; complete credit analyses for the bank’s commercial transactions.
  • Produce independent credit quality assessments with well‑supported risk ratings, identification of credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market trends, and other pertinent issues of deals.
  • Make structure recommendations based on analysis of scenarios, including the company’s case, bank’s base case and a downside case.
  • Identify suspicious activity and activity contrary to the customer’s interest.
  • Partner proactively with relationship managers throughout the credit process and maintain timely, accurate risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits.
  • Spread financial statements and prepare financial/projection models to assess various conditions impacting proposed transactions.
  • Prepare cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, and guarantor statement analysis as appropriate.
  • Enter complete and accurate data into bank systems to support underwriting and portfolio management activities.
  • Attend client/prospect calls with relationship managers to understand the client’s business and analyze the proposed transaction.
  • Recommend risk ratings and present analysis or address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
  • Assist in monitoring credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and commenting on risks associated with non‑compliance.
  • Understand and adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls per company or regulatory standards and policies.
  • Maintain internal control standards, implementing audit points and addressing regulator issues as applicable.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities

Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit lifecycle of the bank’s commercial clients, ensuring accurate risk ratings, financial statement spreads, and decision support for new, renewed, or amended credit transactions.

Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum one year of work experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or equivalent.
  • Or a combined minimum of five years of higher education and/or work experience, including one year in commercial credit or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical ability.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and high accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Customer‑focused interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Education and Experience Preferred
  • Engineering & Construction commercial credit experience.
  • Experience with Capital IQ, Fact Set, and Bloomberg.
Salary

$62,200.00 – $ per year (USD).
