SP Security Specialist

Overview

Incumbents of this position will be the first line of security for State Government Buildings, screening and monitoring deliveries, mail, vehicles and people prior to gaining access.

• Operate various types of screening equipment, such as walk‑through magnetometers and hand‑held magnetometers.
• Utilize the computerized “dock master” delivery program and coordinate with Office of General Services personnel to verify delivery documents and loads.
• Conduct secondary checks of individuals entering through checkpoints, including hand‑held device screening and pat‑down searches.
• Identify dangerous objects in parcels, briefcases, backpacks and equipment using electronic detection and imaging equipment.
• Distinguish between different materials, identify illegal or prohibited items and seize them.
• Participate in training and exercise discretion to determine whether to delay or detain packages or persons for K‑9 searches or further processing.
• Perform daily inspections and testing of equipment; perform normal troubleshooting and testing, while repairs are handled by certified professionals.
• Participate in training in weapon concealment techniques and apply confidential knowledge to daily screening duties.
• Stay aware of notices and bulletins about fraudulent identification and apply learned techniques to detect it.
• Adjust staffing for checkpoints based on large group schedules and traffic flow.
• Monitor activities of individuals and groups; notify supervisors of demonstration groups accessing State Government Buildings.
• Maintain knowledge of laws related to possible illegal activities on State property (e.g., disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, trespass); assess the need for additional staff or presence of sworn officers.
• Physically restrain persons creating an immediate risk to people or property.

• Be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Possess a valid New York State Driver’s License.
• Must be certified physically fit to perform the duties of this position.
• Preference will be given to candidates who currently possess a valid security license.
• Minimum qualifications must be met by the closing date of the posting.
