Medical Imaging Technologists are allied health professionals who perform diagnostic examinations at the request or direction of an Interventional Cardiologist during invasive cardiology, noninvasive cardiology, and/or peripheral vascular study procedures. Through subjective data collection and recording, the Technologist obtains information from which a correct anatomical and physiological diagnosis may be established for each patient.
The Medical Imaging Technologist is actively involved in all phases of the peri‑procedural process. They manipulate procedural instrumentation under the direct supervision of the Interventional Cardiologist and are responsible for supplies and equipment necessary during the procedure. They have an in‑depth understanding of the procedure and anticipate the needs of the Interventional Cardiologist. They maintain the sterile field, can function independently in the scrub role for all procedures (including advanced and highly complex procedures), and function as a circulator under the supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
Under the direction of the Medical Director and/or Section Head, Manager, and Interventional Cardiologist, the technologist performs technical procedures, assists in clinical evaluation and care, creates diagnostic images using their specific modality, and ensures a safe, positive patient experience. In radiation‑producing modalities, technologists practice and enforce radiation safety measures per the New York State Department of Health Code part 16. They support teaching and continue learning as technology changes for themselves and others.
