Job Description Summary

The Patient Access Specialist in The Birthplace is responsible for the capture of demographic and insurance information either by telephone or patient facing. The position requires use of an eligibility application to invoke requests to verify insurance eligibility, interpret responses, and capture appropriate health insurance information as it pertains to the service being rendered. The position requires understanding and applying contractual benefits and engaging in financial discussions with patients regarding payment responsibility.

Must be comfortable in collecting financial responsibility from patients based on eligibility responses or estimates for services.

  • Triage of walk‑in patients – quick data collection and entry in the ADT system, placing patient wristbands for safety, acquiring regulatory signatures on the HIXNY Consent. If a patient is seen by a provider, complete full registration including General Consent and collection of financial responsibility. The Triage role is required to accurately identify the patient in the ADT system to ensure the correct patient is selected;

    this is often problematic as patients may not have identification.
  • ED Zone Support – answering a multi‑line (10) telephone system and managing all inquiries, transferring telephone calls, discharging patients via the patient medical record, and verifying that all laboratory specimens placed in a hazardous bag are accurately labeled by the nurse or provider.
  • Bedside Registration – collection of demographic information, insurance, regulatory consent forms and collection of financial responsibility at the patient's bedside.
  • EMS Desk – shadow answer EMS Radio (Ambulance Agency calls from the field) and provide a brief description of patient age, complaint, vital signs, ambulance agency capture. The EMS Desk role is responsible for accurate identification of patients who often have no identification, EMS inaccuracy of capture of information, and management of unknown patient policy and procedure.
