Job Description Responsibilities

Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to work within the Wadsworth Center's New York's Newborn Screening Program, which is a partner in the federally funded "Screen Plus" project. Screen Plus (https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) is an internationally recognized, comprehensive, flexible, consented multi-disorder newborn screening program. This pilot study will screen for diseases that are being evaluated and may be added to the federally recommended uniform screening panel (RUSP).

In this Assistant Research Scientist position, the incumbent will join a team that includes physicians, scientists, an ethicist, and others who are experts in the field of newborn screening. The incumbent will play an active support role in preparing pilot study samples for testing, which uses state-of-the-art liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry methods to screen for multiple conditions. The incumbent will also support each step of the screening workflow: mail opening, sample retrieval, filter card punching, operating tandem mass spectrometry instruments, data analysis, and reporting.

Additionally, the incumbent will communicate with participating Pilot study hospital coordinators and sponsors throughout New York State to ensure study compliance. The primary mission of the New York State Newborn Screening Program is to rapidly identify newborns with health conditions so that they may receive timely evaluation and treatment (https://).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology, and one year of research experience; OR a Master's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.

This position will require the incumbent to meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. These requirements can be found here:

Preferred Qualifications

Experience or course work in clinical laboratory testing; demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills; accurate and thorough record keeping skills; previous experience with high-volume testing; experience with automated liquid handling and mass spectrometry; tandem mass spectrometry.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Visa sponsorship may be available for this position, in accordance with applicable federal requirements.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states:
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

This position is fully onsite and does not allow telecommuting.

The incumbent in this position will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment.
