Patient Access Specialist

Job Overview

Night‑shift position in the Admitting Operations unit, supporting Telehealth visits for NYS Dept of Corrections clients with Albany Medical Center Emergency Medicine Providers.

• Process incoming referrals and act as liaison between ED providers and DOCCS.
• Set up Webex appointments, maintain the appointment calendar, and cover all weekday evenings, night shifts, and weekend day, evening, overnight shifts, including holiday coverage.
• Capture demographic and insurance information by telephone or patient facing.
• Use the eligibility application to verify insurance, interpret responses, and record appropriate health insurance details.
• Understand and apply contractual benefits, conduct financial discussions with patients about payment responsibility, and collect payment based on eligibility or estimated charges.
• Collaborate with Nursing Supervision and Patient Triage Manager to ensure accurate bed assignment for inpatient and observation patients.
• Manage decedent processes, ensuring accurate completion of death certificates and coordinating body release to funeral homes.

• Associate’s degree preferred; CHAA licensure or obtainable within 2 years of hire.
• 3–5 years of hospital or physician office experience (preferred).
• Strong computer skills and familiarity with ADT systems.
• In‑depth knowledge of insurance contracts, payer authorization requirements, and setting of care.
• Excellent customer service skills and ability to multi‑task in high‑volume, high‑pressure environments.
• Strong judgement, problem‑solving and critical‑thinking abilities.
• Competence in discussing financial responsibilities and sensitive financial matters with patients.
