Overview
The Times Union is seeking a reliable, conscientious, and mechanically adept person interested in entering a four-year apprenticeship program to become a Journeyman Offset Press person in Albany, NY. You will work with an experienced, close-knit team responsible for maintaining and operating a state-of-the-art KBA Commander CL press that produces the Times Union, 14 other daily newspapers, fourteen weeklies, three monthlies, and numerous commercial print publications in a high quality and cost-effective manner.
Responsibilities- Learn a trade that consistently produces high-quality print products.
- Operate and maintain printing presses with attention to deadlines and customer expectations.
- Utilize computers to operate printing presses and monitor production.
- Engage in equipment maintenance and troubleshooting as part of daily duties.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Interest in learning a trade and pursuing a four-year apprenticeship to become a Journeyman Offset Press person.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Comfortable with computers and learning to operate printing presses.
- Technical knowledge or mechanical aptitude in other production environments is helpful.
Hours and days vary based on training and production needs. Normal shift length is 7-1/4 hours. Day shifts begin at 10:15 a.m. and evening shifts start at 5:45 p.m. Starting pay is $22.43/hour for the first year. As an apprentice progresses and acquires required knowledge and skills, pay increases in steps until full Journeyman status is typically achieved within four years.
Sign-on bonus is $1,000 total: $500 after 90 days and $500 after six months of satisfactory employment.
