The Community Mediation Service Corps (CMSC) is an Ameri Corps program administered by the New York State Dispute Resolution Association (NYSDRA) that strengthens Community Dispute Resolution Centers (CDRCs) across New York State through capacity-building service. CMSC members support activities that expand organizational effectiveness, increase community impact, and improve access to conflict resolution services. Service activities may include outreach and community engagement, volunteer recruitment and coordination, case management support, participant services, data and systems improvements, program development, and other initiatives that strengthen the capacity of local organizations to meet community needs.
By increasing the capacity of Community Dispute Resolution Centers, CMSC helps expand access to mediation, restorative practices, conflict coaching, family services, youth programs, and other Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) services throughout New York State. Members play an important role in helping organizations serve more individuals, families, schools, and communities while strengthening the sustainability of the statewide ADR network. CMSC members receive professional training, mentorship, networking opportunities, and hands‑on experience that support their personal and professional growth.
Through service, members develop leadership, communication, facilitation, and problem‑solving skills while exploring careers in ADR, education, nonprofit leadership, human services, public service, and related fields. By investing in both people and organizations, CMSC develops the next generation of conflict resolution practitioners while creating stronger, more connected, and more resilient communities.
The Family Services Specialist Volunteer supports family mediation and conflict resolution services for court‑involved families throughout Mediation Matters' service area. Responsibilities include assisting with intake, screening, scheduling, participant communication, follow‑up, documentation, and data tracking for Family Court referrals. Following training, the Volunteer may support mediation services through observation, co‑mediation, facilitation, and participant support activities. The Volunteer may also assist with court coverage, case coordination, outreach, and service documentation.
These positions are designed to expand organizational capacity and support timely, responsive services for families while providing experienced volunteers with opportunities to deepen their mediation and restorative practices experience.
