Responsibilities- Provide forensic examinations for Albany Medical Center Monday through Friday, day shift, while meeting the program’s educational needs.
- Train residents, nurses, mid-level practitioners, and MDs to standardize care for victims of violence in collaboration with the SANE Medical Director.
- Ensure competencies for Sexual Assault Exam(ers) remain current and up to date.
- Solve scheduling for SAEs and ensure their commitments are met.
- Compile data collection and trends for grant funding with the Medical Director.
- Maintain forensic equipment and supplies.
- Manage the chain of custody for evidence and store equipment appropriately.
- Develop a NYS training program for SAFE/SANE examiners and arrange required training classes.
- Oversee peer review of documentation, providing feedback for quality improvement.
- Conduct quarterly staff meetings to review processes and identify improvements.
- Ensure care of victims meets NYSDOH, IAFN, and Joint Commission standards.
- Coordinate community outreach trainings for examiners.
- Attend community outreach meetings such as area SART, DCJSAE, NYCASA, and report initiatives at staff meetings.
- Remain on schedule for FNE cases to stay current.
- Ensure providers receive compensation for their cases and on‑call pay.
- Continue involvement in open cases from initiation to completion, following up with law enforcement, the crime lab, and the District Attorney’s office.
- Perform audit reviews of sexual assault documentation and provide case‑by‑case feedback to examiners.
- Assist in organizing community events for examiners.
- Provide examiners with conference dates locally and in other states.
- Create a monthly newsletter to update examiners on changes, equipment, and case reviews.
- Work with the Medical Director to standardize pediatric and adult documentation.
- Meet with the lab to stay current on pediatric self‑exposure collection and culture processes.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner course per IAFN Education Guidelines (required).
- 1–3 years of recent acute care clinical experience as a registered nurse (required).
- Knowledge of fundamental nursing theories and current clinical concepts of care.
- Understanding of principles of growth and development, disease processes, and related treatments.
- Familiarity with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and interventions.
- Assessment, treatment, and medication knowledge related to forensic patients.
- Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of professionals and paraprofessionals.
- Effective oral and written communication skills for documentation and inter‑agency interactions.
- Prioritization of tasks and ability to work under pressure, time restraints, and irregular schedules.
- Skills in maintaining confidential patient information.
- Clinical forensic nursing assessment and use of relevant equipment and instruments.
- Effective interpersonal communication, listening, and interviewing techniques with patients, families, and staff.
- Problem‑solving, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills.
- Registered Nurse (RN) with state or compact licensure (required).
- Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification (required).
- NYS SAFE Certification (required).
- SANE‑A (Sexual Assault Nurse Exam Adult) certification (required).
- SANE‑P (Sexual Assault Nurse Exam Pediatric) certification (preferred).
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification (preferred).
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENPC) (preferred).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (preferred).
