General Responsibilities
The Nurse Manager (Registered Nurse) for Comprehensive Integrated Recovery Services at Whitney Young Health provides clinical and administrative oversight for the day-to-day nursing functions within the Comprehensive Integrated Outpatient Treatment Program (CIOTP)—delivering substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, opioid treatment programming (OTP), and integrated primary care services. Central to this role is the responsibility for the supervision of nursing personnel and the coordination of integrated healthcare functions including the administration of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), health screening, patient education, wellness promotion, and primary care services delivered within the integrated recovery setting.
The Nurse Manager serves as a liaison between addiction treatment services and primary care, while ensuring the effective management of patients’ behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment and primary care services.
- Provide administrative and clinical oversight for nursing personnel and medical support staff within outpatient, OTP, and integrated primary care services
- Provide administrative and clinical supervision for nursing personnel and medical support staff within integrated outpatient programs and OTP
- Oversee nursing protocols and standards of practice specific to: medication administration and dosing, medication-assisted treatment, nursing assessments, physical health monitoring and patient education, toxicology testing
- Ensure nursing practices remain in compliance with governing and accreditation bodies and reflective of NYS OASAS regulations, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), and The Joint Commission.
- Coordinate nursing schedules, duties and staffing coverage to ensure continuity of patient care—including direction and supervision for the integrated nursing staff.
- Support the implementation of integrated care workflows between the CIOTP and primary care services.
- Develop, revise, implement, and monitor nursing policies, procedures, and programs, including standards and outcome measurements.
- Collaborate with Director of Nursing, medical providers and primary care partners in the support of: chronic disease management, preventive health screenings, communicable disease prevention and monitoring, vaccination initiatives, wellness and health promotional activities
- Promote integrated treatment/service planning addressing physical health, behavioral health and recovery goals.
- Ensure practices reflect safe and compliant administration of methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other approved medications using in addiction treatment
- Monitor medication administration procedures, dosing documentation and medication documentation and storage practices.
- Collaborate with prescribing providers regarding medication adherence, patient response, and clinical concerns.
- Monitor diversion control practices and medication safety initiatives.
- Ensure patient education regarding medications, side-effects, overdose prevention, harm reduction principles, and wellness management.
- Carry out the medical orders as directed by the Physician/Nurse Practitioner/Medical Provider.
- Ensure the completion of nursing assessments (including mental health, nutrition and a pain assessment) on all patients as assigned.
- Maintain timely, accurate documentation of patient care, communication, medical orders, referrals, progress notes, discharge notes, supplies, inventories and all other patient care related paperwork.
- Coordinate and assist the physician with all medical clearances, physical examinations and follow-up visits.
- Lead nursing-related patient safety initiatives and promote a culture of safety throughout the programs.
- Monitor incident reporting and follow-up related to medication errors, adverse events, and patient safety matters.
- Ensure emergency preparedness procedures and medical response protocols are maintained and regularly reviewed within the dispensary and other integrated programs.
