Job Description

Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist I to work within the Bureau of Viral Replication and Vector Biology, Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. The incumbent will support multiple investigators carrying out cutting‑edge grant‑funded studies investigating vector biology and vector‑borne virus transmission. The Research Scientist I will be responsible for the maintenance of state‑of‑the‑art insectary laboratories, including high‑containment laboratories, and the arthropods housed in these facilities.

The incumbent will additionally perform experimental infections in live vectors, and both processing and testing of experimental and field‑derived samples.

This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health®!

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences and two years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences and at least three years of research experience.
  • Academic and/or work experience in vector biology.
  • Experience working with arthropods including mosquitoes and ticks.
  • Experience with virology.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to pathogen quantification via classical and/or molecular techniques.
  • Experience with field studies or collections.
  • Experience working with infectious agents, including both BSL-2 and BSL-3 pathogens.
  • Experience troubleshooting and coordinating laboratory maintenance and repairs.
  • Experience using statistical analysis software including but not limited to Graph Pad Prism and R.
  • Experience writing SOPs and maintaining organized lab records/inventory.
Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Visa sponsorship may be available for this position, in accordance with applicable federal requirements.

Travel up to 10% of the time will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states:
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire.

This position is fully onsite and does not allow telecommuting.

The incumbent in this position will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to a Powered Air‑Purifying Respirator (PAPRs).
