Visitor Services Assistant 2, Assistant Museum Store Supervisor

The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Visitor Services Assistant 2, Assistant Museum Store Supervisor position in the New York State Museum. The Visitor Services Assistant 2 reports to the Director of Retail Operations (Museum Support Services Specialist
2). Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in the reopening and ongoing management of the Museum's Gift Store, playing a vital role in enhancing the visitors' experience and supporting the Museum's educational mission.
  • Supports key museum store operations including purchasing, inventory control, visual merchandising, and customer engagement. Assists the Director of Retail Operations in overseeing store operations; serves as the store lead in the absence of the Director of Retail Operations.
  • Leads visual merchandising strategies for the store and upholds cleanliness standards.
  • Assists in training and scheduling employees. Provides guidance and support to ensure cashier staff perform their duties effectively and maintain high service standards.
  • Addresses customer complaints and inquiries, ensuring a positive shopping experience. Strives to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Manages inventory levels on the floor, ensuring the store is adequately stocked. Coordinates with suppliers regarding deliveries and maintains accurate inventory records on ingoing and outgoing products.
  • Processes new inventory by entering data into the POS system, creating price tags, and organizing products for sale.
  • Supports the Director of Retail Operations in achieving sales targets. Supports and advances store promotions and marketing in person and online.
  • Ensures compliance with store policies and procedures and maintains established financial controls.
  • Assists in preparing reports on sales performance, inventory levels, and store foot traffic.
  • Operates and manages point of sale (POS) and computer inventory systems effectively.
  • Provides cashier and frontline service coverage as needed to ensure seamless operations.
  • Ensures the store is secured at closing by checking if the doors are locked, alarms are set, and any safes are locked.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Promotion: one year of experience as a Visitor Services Assistant 1.
  • Non-competitive:
    Three years of experience in the visitor/customer service environment in a cultural institution, including one year as a supervisor.
  • * Substitution:
    College study may be substituted for up to two years of general experience based on 30 semester credit hours being equal to one year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Basic math and cash handling skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to make quick decisions
  • Familiarity with retail management software (e.g., POS systems)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment
  • 2+ years of experience in retail or customer service
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or assistant manager role preferred

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.

Travel Requirement:
This position will require TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS (5%) in-state/Statewide travel.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $61,548 based on annual performance advances and traineeship advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
