Duties Description Under the technical supervision of higher level staff, the primary responsibilities of the Air Pollution Meteorologist 1 with the Division of Air Resources will include evaluating and forecasting atmospheric air pollution and weather-related phenomena; preparing inputs and performing dispersion modeling to assess the air quality impacts from various types of air pollution sources; providing weather information to assist authorities with emergency operations for weather-related problems;
issuing air quality health advisories as needed; interpreting federal and state air pollution rules and regulations with regard to the applicability of air quality impact assessment through the use of established mathematical models; assisting in preparation of reports; evaluating the adequacy of monitoring sites for studies in progress; reviewing and assisting in the implementation of technological developments in air pollution meteorology and mathematical modeling;
and participating in training programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Good written and oral communication skills
* Able to provide guidance through weather forecasting for statewide weather-related emergency operations.
* Possess working knowledge of principles and practices of weather analysis and forecasting
* Able to travel to meetings and outside conferences as required.
* Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with peers
* Capable of dealing effectively with the public, government and other outside entities
Minimum Qualifications Air Pollution Meteorologist Trainee 1, NS=Grade 14:
Bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, environmental engineering or science, environmental studies, physics, mathematical sciences, or physical sciences, which must include or be supplemented by 21 semester credit hours in meteorology or atmospheric science.
An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor's degree in a related field can substitute for four years of experience; a master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.
Air Pollution Meteorologist Trainee 2, NS=Grade 16:
Satisfactory completion of one year of service as an Air Pollution Meteorologist Trainee 1; or a bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, environmental engineering or science, environmental studies, physics, mathematical sciences, or physical sciences, which must include or be supplemented by 21 semester credit hours in meteorology or atmospheric science and one year of professional work experience
* in the field of meteorology or atmospheric science directly related to air pollution.
An associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor's degree in a related field can substitute for four years of experience; a master's degree in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.
Air Pollution Meteorologist 1, Grade 18:
Satisfactory completion of one year of service as an Air Pollution Meteorologist Trainee 2; or a bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, environmental engineering or science, environmental studies, physics, mathematical sciences, or physical sciences, which must include or be supplemented by 21 semester credit hours in meteorology or atmospheric science and two years of professional work experience
