Duties Description
The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Facilities and Business Services is seeking a candidate for a Maintenance Assistant position. As a Maintenance Assistant you will perform routine, repetitive semi-skilled maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in one or a combination of the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. Incumbents may also perform journey-level activities under supervision, or after receiving detailed instructions, to learn and perfect their skills.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with a variety of construction trades including but not limited to paint department, masonry, carpentry, and electrical.
- Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including but not limited to saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools.
- Perform semiskilled activities in preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish and other finishes and stains to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture and equipment.
- Assist at CEC test distribution as needed.
- Assist with grounds and snow removal as needed.
- Complete Asbestos awareness training and other training courses as needed.
Non-Competitive Appointment:
Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services;
AND possess a valid New York State driver’s license.
- Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of experience and coursework will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Verification of a valid New York State driver’s license will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.
Candidates are required to possess a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Maintenance Assistant is dependent upon maintaining a valid New York State driver’s license. Failure to maintain a valid New York State driver’s license will result in removal from employment. Incumbents of this position are considered essential personnel. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Monday – Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $52,413 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
