Job SummaryContributes to student academic success and completion by assisting students in their study of mathematics and applied mathematics courses. Assists students to become successful and independent learners by using Socratic questioning to improve their critical thinking, problem solving, study strategies and ability to make connections between mathematical concepts and applications.
Essential DutiesKeyboarding and operation of other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and sufficient hearing and speaking ability to communicate with staff and students. May move from table to table to assist students in the Math Café. Must demonstrate solutions using paper and pencil and whiteboard. No special coordination beyond normal mobility and handling of everyday objects is needed.
WorkingConditions
Work is performed in a highly active, open lab setting and instructional service area with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. The environment includes multiple background conversations and frequent interruptions. Some shifts require working evenings or weekends.
Education and Experience- Must have successfully completed differential and integral calculus (MTH 251 and MTH 252) with a C or better.
- Requires an AA/AS degree plus the equivalent of one year, full‑time related experience; or three years full‑time related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
- An AA/AS in mathematics or related is preferred.
- Satisfactory completion of coursework in statistics and physical sciences (chemistry and physics) is also preferred.
- Current knowledge of mathematics and the ability to shift rapidly between questions from widely different areas.
- Successfully completed differential and integral calculus with a C grade or higher.
- Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
- Working knowledge of instructional practices and techniques sufficient to tutor students on an informal level.
- Basic knowledge of LBCC mathematics curriculum.
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate clearly.
- Comfortable interacting with a diverse group of students in terms of mathematical abilities, learning styles, backgrounds, and personalities.
- Ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position and work with multiple students continuously throughout the assigned shift.
