Position: Instructional Assistant 2

Job Summary

Collaborates with the Writing Center Coordinator and WR121Z/Q instructors to deliver embedded co‑requisite support, facilitate group learning, and communicate student progress. The Instructional Assistant also reaches out to at‑risk students, develops and implements in‑person writing workshops, creates digital content to enhance asynchronous learning, and provides an essential link between WR121Q students and campus support services.

Essential Duties
  • Collaborates closely with WR121/Q instructors to provide embedded academic support within co‑requisite course sections, assists with facilitation of group engagement, activity‑based learning, and just‑in‑time review in co‑requisite WR courses, and maintains consistent and effective communication with instructors regarding student progress and learning needs.
  • Provides instructional support to students across all levels of writing by addressing specific questions related to writing assignments, writing process, and application of writing concepts. Develops instructional materials and learning aids to reinforce understanding and promote skill development.
  • Acts as a bridge between the classroom and academic support services at the college. Reaches out to underperformance or at‑risk students in WR121Z/Q and collaborates with the Writing Center Coordinator to coordinate student support. Informs students about writing courses and Learning Center procedures.
  • Collaborates with the Writing Center Coordinator and Teaching Assistants to develop and implement WR121Q skill‑support workshops for in‑person learning environments, create and maintain digital content to supplement workshops, support asynchronous learning, and enhance student access to instructional resources.
  • Tracks relevant data related to co‑requisite support services, including student attendance of workshops, usage of digital resources, and outcomes. Prepares and submits quarterly reports to the Learning Center Manager and provides additional reports as requested.
  • Develops training materials around embedded writing support.
  • Continuously seeks and integrates current trends and best practices in writing pedagogy and student support (learning assistance) through sustained professional development activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Requires the ability to operate a computer keyboard or other office equipment, read words and numbers, communicate effectively, and carry on routine conversations in person or over the phone. Work is performed in a high‑activity instructional service area with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. The environment is busy, with multiple background conversations occurring and requires multitasking with frequent interruptions.

Considerable time is spent working at a computer.

Education and Experience

Position requires an AA, AS, or AAT degree in English, Liberal Arts, or a related field; successful completion of WR121 with a “B” or higher; and two years of experience tutoring writing and/or assisting students in a writing classroom.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Broad knowledge of writing with the ability to shift rapidly between questions from widely differing areas; working knowledge of instructional techniques sufficient to instruct and tutor students informally; strong communication skills to interact with a diverse population of students; ability to help individual students or groups of students in or out of a classroom setting; independent performance of essential responsibilities; ability to model metacognitive and critical thinking skills;

understanding and interpreting staff instructions; computing skills sufficient to use application software and online resources; excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; strong planning, organizing, and prioritizing skills.
