Job Summary:
This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for "[POOL]" positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. If/when a position becomes available, the College will review applications from this pool, and interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening.
Applicants must reapply to the pool annually to maintain their active status in the pool.
Provides instructional support for faculty across the curriculum by assisting students. Instructs students individually or in small groups working on writing projects to improve their planning, drafting, revising, editing, or presenting skills as well as to effectively use software or online resources to successfully complete writing assignments. Fields faculty questions and concerns in the Coordinator's absence.
Essential Duties:
* Provides supplemental instruction to students from any discipline with writing assignments or writing-related course work. Instructional assistance includes work both with hard-copy text and with the use of computer resources as a writing, research, and learning tool.
* Encourages students and promotes a supportive learning environment. Assesses student needs. Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students with their writing, revising, and presenting skills. Promotes students' self-reliance, mastery of grammar, composing, revising, editing, and presenting skills. Maintains students' confidentiality.
* Instructs students one-on-one, in small groups, or through the Online Writing Lab in:
Interpreting and developing strategies for writing assignments. Improving their writing skills and strategies at all stages of writing (prewriting, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, and presenting). Developing strategies involved in writing longer research papers or technical reports, including paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting skills; avoiding plagiarism; using in-text citations, and preparing MLA or APA bibliographies. Preparing resumes and applications or scholarship letters.
Using online writing resources (for example, prewriting activities for essay writing or grammar diagnostics or other online sites such as Purdue's OWL or LB Brief). Responds to OWL submissions and assists with OWL training.
* Captures data by ensuring signing students in and out of Tutor Trac. Instructs students in how to schedule appointments using Tutor Trac.
* Maintains current and adequate supply of comprehensive resources and instructional materials. Develops supplemental materials as needed. Takes initiative in Writing Center problem solving and project management.
* Provides Writing Center tours to introduce students to the writing support services. May work with Writing Center Instructional Specialist Coordinator to conduct classroom visits and present workshops.
* Regularly attends Writing Center meetings. Assists in training new staff, presents training materials at meetings, and provides curriculum development recommendations for tutor training
* Collaborates with all Writing Center staff to promote a supportive, inspiring, and comfortable learning and tutoring environment. Listens to and supports Peer Mentors.
* Participates in professional development opportunities.
Physical Requirements and
Working Conditions:
* Requires well developed listening and speaking abilities to communicate with staff and students.
* Requires arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate keyboard or other computer-related equipment.
* Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers.
* Work is performed in an open lab setting in the Learning Center with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.
Education and Experience
* Position requires AS degree with demonstrated mastery in college composition and rhetoric.
* Comfort with public speaking preferred.
* Experience in using a range of software and online resources related to writing required.
* BA degree preferred.
* Teaching experience in a writing classroom preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Requires knowledge of college composition and rhetoric.
* Must have mastery of grammar and mechanics, varieties of writing processes, and research strategies.
* Must have computing skills and knowledge sufficient to use software identified in job description.
* Requires strong communication skills to interact informally with students with diverse backgrounds and varying levels of ability.
* Requires the ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
* Must have demonstrated ability to understand and interpret faculty instructions in order to assist students.
