Job Summary
The position is a pooled part‑time instructor position for the Physical Sciences Department. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for potential openings in courses such as general science, astronomy, science, technology & society, chemistry for health occupations, general chemistry, organic chemistry, algebra‑based physics, and calculus‑based physics. Candidates must reapply annually to remain eligible. The instructor will develop, plan, and deliver lectures, laboratory activities, and assignments in accordance with approved course outlines.
Responsibilities- Impart excitement and enthusiasm into the teaching of physics.
- Develop course schedules and syllabi.
- Plan, develop, and deliver classroom lectures and activities and write tests and other assessment tools.
- Develop or adapt engaging laboratory exercises for non‑science majors.
- Practice and enforce departmental safety regulations in the lab.
- Maintain equipment accountability and ensure all lab equipment is in good condition after each session.
- Deliver brief pre‑lab lectures and activities and evaluate student progress.
- Promote good laboratory technique and facilitate lab clean‑up.
- Interact effectively with students and staff from diverse backgrounds and collaborate with supervisors, colleagues, and staff as part of an education team.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written English.
- Keep accurate grade and attendance records.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, with sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to set up and operate equipment.
- Normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.
- Visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment.
- Approximately seventy percent of job duties involve standing.
- Work will be performed in classrooms and college science labs.
- Exposure to safety or health hazards is possible.
- Laboratory work may be required after normal hours or during special weekend events.
- Master’s degree or minimum 27 graduate quarter hours in physics.
- One year of broad‑based teaching experience in a high school, community college, or university setting, or comparable experience.
- Respectfully work with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.
- Effective communication in oral and written English.
- Criminal background check – C4.
- Employment is contingent on completion of a post‑offer criminal background check.
- New employees must be compensated via direct deposit.
- Applicants must have Oregon residency at the time work commences.
- New hires must complete the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Form I‑9 within three days of hire.
- Linn‑Benton Community College does not offer visa sponsorship.
Courses are paid on a per‑credit basis. New part‑time faculty begin at Step 1 of the pay scale, with step progression each term if eligible.
- Step 1 rate listed in the pay scale table for each credit.
- Compensation per hour for meetings, training, advising, curriculum development, and related work is outlined in the pay scale table.
