Position: [POOL] Instructional Assistant 1 (Math Help Desk)

Instructional Assistant 1 (Math Help Desk)

Job Summary: This role supports student academic success in mathematics by providing individualized assistance, fostering critical thinking, and encouraging independent learning. The Instructional Assistant works within the Learning Center’s Math Help Desk and other instructional support spaces to address student questions and promote effective study habits.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students in all math courses from basic math through calculus, answering questions about problems, activities, and math tools such as graphing calculators.
  • Support applied mathematics students by explaining and modeling study strategies, offering solutions in multiple ways to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Welcome students to Math instructional support services and assist their integration into the Math Help Desk, Math Angle, or Math Café.
  • Maintain a positive, student‑centered environment by learning students’ names, encouraging collaborative study, and promoting a growth mindset toward mathematics.
  • Model effective math study habits, including note‑taking, use of course materials, time management, and test preparation.
  • Provide additional resources and explanations to build learner confidence, reduce math anxiety, and sustain persistence.
  • Promote use of the check‑in system (Tutortrac) and maintain accurate tallies of student usage by class and time of day.
  • Inform students about math courses and Learning Center procedures, referring them to campus resources as needed.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and training to meet CRLA certified tutor standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Successfully completed differential and integral calculus (MTH 251 and MTH 252) with a grade of C or better.
  • AA/AS degree plus either:
    • One year of full‑time related experience, or
    • Three years of full‑time related experience,
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables performance of all job duties.
  • AA/AS in mathematics or a related field preferred.
  • Completion of coursework in statistics and physical sciences (chemistry, physics) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Current knowledge of mathematics with the ability to switch rapidly among disparate topics.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey concepts clearly to diverse learners.
  • Experience using instructional practices and techniques for informal tutoring.
  • Familiarity with LBCC mathematics curriculum and course materials.
  • Competence with technology such as Desmos, My Math Lab , ALEKS, and graphing calculators.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with colleagues, and with a diverse student population.
  • Capacity to tutor an average of 10 students per hour.
  • Proficiency in delivering tutoring in multiple modalities (in‑person, online).
  • Experience teaching developmental math at a community college is preferred; experience tutoring mathematics is desirable.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Keyboarding and operation of office equipment; visual acuity to read words and numbers; hearing, speaking, and basic coordination for classroom interaction. Work is performed in a highly active, open lab setting with frequent interruptions; some shifts may require evenings or weekends.

Employment Requirements

Criminal Background Check – C4 required.

Salary

Position Grade 14 – $18.25 per hour, Part‑time hourly.
