Position: [POOL] PT Faculty, General Science

Job Summary

This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for [POOL] positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. If and when a position becomes available, the College will review applications from this pool and interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening. Applicants must reapply to the pool annually to maintain their active status.

The Physical Science Department at LBCC offers a wide range of courses including general science, geology, oceanography, and astronomy. The general science instructor develops, plans, and presents organized lectures, laboratory activities, and out-of-class assignments in accordance with approved course outlines.

Responsibilities
  • Teach General and Physical Science classes.
  • Prepare and develop materials for classes utilizing approved course outcomes. Depending on the course assignment, you may be asked to use a curriculum developed by the department.
  • Complete all administrative tasks associated with teaching a course: assign and grade student work, establish reasonable communication with students, report student attainment of course outcomes, maintain student records, comply with college policies and processes related to teaching workload.
  • Keep abreast of development in subject area, educational technology, innovative teaching techniques, and continuously strive for professional improvement.
  • Establish and maintain opportunities for reasonable and consistent out-of-class contact with students.
  • Assure that lab equipment is appropriately used, following all safety protocols and procedures. Verify that all equipment is accounted for at the end of each laboratory section.
  • Exemplify and promote the mission of LBCC.
  • Connect students to college support services and resources to promote student success and retention. Maintain reasonable communication with college support services to this end.
  • Work effectively with students and staff of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and ages. Promote both a classroom environment and a curriculum of equity and inclusivity.
  • Interact with supervisors, colleagues, and staff as part of a team.
  • Participate as assigned in occasional department and advisory meetings.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Must have physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods in classroom and laboratory environments; sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate laboratory equipment, handle specimens, and prepare materials; requires normal hearing and speaking skills; requires visual acuity to read numbers and words, operate laboratory equipment, and observe experiments. Job duties require frequent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional bending, kneeling, and lifting of light to medium weight (10–50 pounds) such as lab equipment, instructional materials, or supplies.

Work is performed indoors in classroom and laboratory environments, with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, biological specimens, laboratory equipment, and related safety risks. Personal protective equipment such as safety goggles, gloves, and lab coats may be required. May involve occasional outdoor activities for fieldwork.

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in a physical science discipline or a master’s degree in another field with a minimum of 27 graduate quarter hours in the primary field to be taught.
