[POOL] Instructional Assistant 1 (Writing Center)

Job Summary: This pooled position provides instructional support in the Writing Center by assisting students individually or in small groups across all disciplines. The role involves teaching writing strategies, troubleshooting student challenges, managing tutoring technology, and contributing to continuous improvement of Writing Center services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide supplemental instruction to students on writing assignments and related coursework, using both hard‑copy text and computer‑based resources.
  • Encourage students and promote a supportive learning environment; assess student needs; offer a range of instructional approaches for writing, revising, and presenting; promote self‑reliance, grammar mastery, and composition skills while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Instruct one‑on‑one, small groups, or online writing labs in writing strategies at all stages (prewriting, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, presenting); develop strategies for longer research papers or technical reports, including paraphrasing, summarizing, avoiding plagiarism, using in‑text citations, and preparing MLA/APA bibliographies; prepare resumes, applications, or scholarship letters; utilize online writing resources such as Purdue OWL and LB Brief; respond to OWL submissions and offer OWL training.
  • Record tutoring sessions by signing students in and out of Tutor Trac; instruct students in scheduling appointments using Tutor Trac.
  • Maintain current instructional materials and develop supplemental resources as needed; take initiative in Writing Center problem‑solving and project management.
  • Provide Writing Center tours; collaborate with the Writing Center Instructional Specialist Coordinator to conduct classroom visits and workshops.
  • Attend Writing Center meetings regularly; assist in training new staff, present training materials, and recommend curriculum improvements for tutor training.
  • Collaborate with all Writing Center staff to create a supportive, inspiring, and comfortable tutoring environment; listen to and support Peer Mentors.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to writing instruction and tutoring.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Well‑developed listening and speaking abilities to communicate with staff and students.
  • Arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate keyboard or other computer‑related equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read words and numbers.
  • Work performed in an open lab setting in the Learning Center with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree with demonstrated mastery in college composition and rhetoric.
  • Preferred:
    Comfort with public speaking.
  • Experience using a range of software and online resources related to writing.
  • Preferred:
    Teaching experience in a writing classroom.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of college composition and rhetoric principles.
  • Mastery of grammar and mechanics, various writing processes, and research strategies.
  • Computing skills sufficient to use the software identified in this description.
  • Strong communication skills to interact informally with students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of ability.
  • Ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to understand and interpret faculty instructions to assist students.
  • Ability to manage a group of writers and move easily from student to student among group writers.
  • Understanding of the needs and differences of adult students and appropriate responsiveness.
  • Commitment to uphold Writing Center best practices and Learning Center etiquette guidelines.
  • Sensitivity in dealing with students regarding academic performance.
  • Comfortable working independently in the Writing Center area, enforcing acceptable noise levels, use of food/drink, and computer use.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, including computers.
