Manager, Plant Engineering and Maintenance

Overview

Ball Corporation is recruiting for a Plant Engineering Manager to lead the plant engineering function. The role involves managing the plant engineering team, coordinating with group office, ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient operation of the plant engineering department.

• Maintain a safe and secure work environment; correct unsafe acts/conditions, facilitate monthly safety meetings, perform monthly safety inspections, and investigate accidents as required.
• Support development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the food safety system.
• Direct and coordinate the activities of the plant engineering function within the plant and its interface with the group office.
• Establish and monitor plant tooling control and change control systems; prepare budgets and AFEs for plant projects.
• Direct communication with group engineering; ensure new developments affecting plant engineering are transmitted and standardized methods are established.
• Establish programs to control maintenance and repair (M & R) and tooling inventories.
• Provide reports to the plant manager, department heads, group manufacturing engineer, and group engineering to ensure efficient department operation.
• Maintain contact with state and local agencies regarding developing problems or changes within area of responsibility.
• Direct and manage projects related to equipment and building modification/repair.
• Assist plant environmental manager to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulatory requirements.
• Monitor utility costs and implement conservation methods.
• Ensure facility safety, housekeeping, and positive relations with local bargaining unit where applicable.
• Identify opportunities to improve spoilage in all areas (ODMs, cans, utilities).
• Establish and maintain an effective telecommunications environment for plant operations.
• Prepare bid packages, negotiate contracts, and supervise contractor/vendor work at the facility.
• Initiate, review, master, and follow SOPs for the area of responsibility.
• Maintain an employee relations climate of trust and confidence with employees, union stewards, and representatives to achieve plant and company goals.
• Work schedule may include weekends; overtime or on-call as directed by management.
• Comply with hazardous waste management and environmental requirements; participate in training and emergency procedures as directed.
• Communicate with emergency coordinator (EC) or Environmental Focal Point/Environmental Manager (EFP/EM) regarding environmental activities.
• Understand and respond to EC directions during emergencies; maintain and implement contingency plans as required.
• Complete and maintain environmental documentation as trained or directed (inspections, labeling, record keeping, equipment maintenance).
• Comply with job safety practices and plant/corporate directives for safe work performance.
• Recognize waste streams and minimize waste generation; ensure proper disposal and segregation of wastes.
• Comply with environmental regulations when handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials.

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Experience: 5+ years in a managerial role in a manufacturing/industrial environment; 5+ years in engineering/maintenance in a manufacturing/industrial environment.
• Licenses: Oregon General Supervising Electrician License preferred.

• Ability to apply intensive and diversified evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard plant engineering techniques and criteria.
• Ability to handle sensitive and proprietary information confidentially.
• Ability to negotiate with contractors for facilities/buildings maintenance.
• Maintain professional competence, ethical integrity, knowledge, and skills.

• Working knowledge of engineering principles, practices, policies, procedures, and standard managerial practices and business principles.
• Adherence to company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct as outlined in Ball Corporation manuals.

• Work in both office and manufacturing environments; exposure to hazards, high noise, chemicals, etc.
