ATI is currently looking for a Research and Development Metallurgist (or Melt Engineer) at our Millersburg, Oregon location. We’re looking for someone highly motivated with a proactive mindset, ability to manage multiple priorities, and committed to delivering high‑quality, data‑driven results in a manufacturing environment. The Engineer takes initiative in solving complex problems and enthusiastically tackles challenges, including highly uncertain situations. You will work independently as well as alongside the R&D team, operations, maintenance, and customers.
In the role you’ll make unique products that will end up in space, medical devices, and high‑performance applications. The markets we serve are as exciting as the engineering challenges we solve, and you’ll see your work have a real impact. You’ll work in a flexible environment to meet the needs of high‑consequence applications; the role requires adapting to the unknown and developing solutions on the fly as problems arise and customers request new things.
There are many opportunities for growth into new processes and through exposure to a wide range of customers and stakeholders. This is an onsite position typically working Monday‑Friday 7 AM to 4 PM.

- Support R&D management in evaluating requests, determining feasibility, and assessing whether a strong business case exists.
- Drive capability developments, including establishing new processes that meet customer needs for downstream processing of R&D melts. Responsibility for process improvements; continuous improvement with a focus on throughput speed and RFT as well as transformational changes to capability.
- Lead and support raw ingredient procurement and inventory management.
- Support ongoing and new R&D projects through melting material and leading internal pilot scale work.
- Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, materials science, engineering, or related technical field.
- In lieu of a metallurgical degree, candidate should have at least 4 years experience in metallurgy / metals manufacturing.
- Knowledge of or experience working in a manufacturing plant environment.
- Knowledge of melting processes (PAM, EB, ESR, VAR, small arc button melting).
- Knowledge or experience in refractory metallurgy.
- Project management training or demonstrated skills.
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
- Python or other coding experience.
- Controls experience, especially PLC and real‑time process controls.
