General Statement of Duties / Job Objectives
Performs correctional work in the care and custody of adults in the Jail. Processes intake and release.
Essential FunctionsClassifications may also perform additional duties that are logically related to the position. The balance of duties may change from time to time based on management decisions. Any shift, emphasis, or rebalancing does not constitute a change in the essential functions of the job classification.
Knowledge, Skill and AbilityKnowledge of modern policies, procedures and techniques for custody, care and transport of inmates. Familiarity with laws and ordinances applicable to jail standards. Ability to use fingerprinting, photography, intoxilyzer, video monitoring and teletype equipment. Proficiency with firearms and motor vehicles, including operation on adverse road conditions. Ability to maintain order, supervise inmates, exercise mature judgment and react professionally in emergency and stressful situations.
Ability to interpret laws, rules and directives. Ability to work independently and foster effective relationships with staff, inmates, agencies and the public.
Graduation from a senior high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate.
Necessary Special Qualifications- Citizen of the United States and 21 years of age or older.
- Good moral fitness as determined by a thorough background investigation.
- No felony convictions, any misdemeanor involving violent behavior, or unlawful use, possession, delivery, or manufacture of controlled substances, narcotics or dangerous drugs.
- Pass written test and oral interview as prescribed by the Sheriff’s Office.
- Willing to work weekends, holidays, varying shifts and extra hours.
- Valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
- Possession of the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Basic Certificate and LEDS certification within one year of appointment.
- Pass a comprehensive medical and psychological examination.
- Maintain a valid First Aid and CPR card including instruction on AED operation.
- Meet standards set forth in OAR 259‑008‑0010.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather. Physical requirements include corrected vision of at least 20/30; hearing and speaking ability; ability to sit, stand, read, write, walk, run, bend, stoop, and lift or move up to 50 pounds; dexterity and coordination for handling tools and controls; rapid shift from minimal to high-stress exertion.
