Overview

Ready to make a difference? The City of Albany is now hiring Firefighter/EMT-Paramedics to join a dynamic team committed to emergency response and community safety.

Albany Fire Department is accepting applications for multiple vacant positions and to establish an eligibility list for future openings. These positions are regular, full-time and are represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

Salary Range: $77,872.06 to $98,442.61 annually. We value prior experience. Starting salary placement within the posted range will be determined based on consecutive years of paid firefighter experience, in accordance with applicable equal pay laws.

Completion of the application process includes the following requirements. Each of the following must be submitted prior to being considered.

Anticipated Timeline & Application Process
  • Accepting applications through mid-March
  • Virtual Interview, Formal Interview & EMS Skills Test conducted in April
  • Pre-Employment (background, psych & medical) conducted May through July
  • Academy begins September 1st
  • Academy ends mid-December
  • First review of applications will be on Monday, March 16th, for any applications received by midnight on Sunday, March 15th. Applications received on or after March 15th will be reviewed and considered as needed, and this recruitment may be closed at any time after March 15th without prior notice.

All Applicants:

  • Attach the following certifications to your application:
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • NFPA Firefighter I
  • NFP A Driver or Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC)
  • Current EMT-Paramedic license or proof of enrollment in paramedic school. Candidates currently enrolled in a paramedic program must successfully graduate on or before September 1, 2026.
  • Submit to Albany Fire through National Testing Network (NTN):
  • Fire Team test scores (test scores must be dated within the 12 months preceding the date of application)
  • Valid CPAT card (applicants must have successfully completed the CPAT within the 12 months preceding the date of application)
Salary Incentives & Benefits

Salary Incentives

  • Paramedic License Incentive: $410.18 semi-monthly; $9,844.26 annually
  • 3% Bilingual Incentive (Spanish or American Sign Language)
  • Longevity Incentive: 3% at 10 years; 6% at 15 years; 9% at 20 years

Specialized Team

Incentives:

  • Hazardous Materials Team: $164.07 semi-monthly; $3,937.70 annually
  • Technical Rescue/USAR Team: $164.07 semi-monthly; $3,937.70 annually
  • Water Rescue Team: $164.07 semi-monthly; $3,937.70 annually
  • Fire Investigation Group: $123.05 semi-monthly; $2,953.28 annually

Schedule:

1:3, 2:3 schedule (24 hrs on followed by 72 hours off; then 48 hrs on followed by 72 hrs off)

Benefits include:

  • Full medical, vision and dental coverage for employee and all eligible dependents with City paying approximately 95% of premium; currently, the employee-paid premium is $136.50 for employee-only and family coverage.
  • 72 hours of personal leave frontloaded per fiscal year
  • 12.5 hours of vacation leave per semi-monthly pay period, with progressive increases
  • 6 hours of sick leave per semi-monthly pay period
  • Excellent retirement benefits:
    City-paid participation in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (OPSRP and IAP);
    City-paid contribution into pre-tax deferred compensation plan

Role and Responsibilities

The Albany Fire Department is a multi-role provider of all-hazard emergency protective services. All emergency services personnel are cross-trained to handle fire, rescue, and medical emergencies. The Fire Department is responsible for emergency and non-emergency ambulance transport at the paramedic level in the City of Albany and portions of Linn and Benton Counties. Paramedic engine companies also operate from each of the fire stations.

Position details include responding to fire, medical, and other emergencies; operating within the Incident Command System; firefighting and related activities; EMS duties as an EMT Paramedic; and performing program area duties as assigned. Duties include driving emergency apparatus, extricating trapped victims, fire suppression, operating pumps, laying hose, salvage and overhaul, and other fire ground activities. This is a non-supervisory position with no typical lead responsibilities;

incumbents may provide training as needed.

Education & Experience

Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Any other equivalent combination of experience/training that ensures the ability to perform the work requirements listed above.
