Public Health WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Public Health Department (Classification 550)
Non-Union, Non-Benefited, Part-Time Position

Linn County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available.

This is a part‑time, limited duration, non‑benefited position performing breastfeeding peer counseling for WIC participants. Under the supervision of the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Coordinator, a person employed in this position will provide basic breastfeeding information, support, and counseling to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding participants by telephone, texting, and during office visits.

Responsibilities
  • Receives a caseload of WIC participants and makes routine periodic contacts with participants.
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC participants, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Helps participants prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns within the scope of a Peer Counselor.
  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding participants by telephone, texting, and during office visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC program.
  • Facilitates prenatal classes to prepare participants for breastfeeding and postpartum groups for breastfeeding WIC participants.
  • Respects each participant by keeping her information strictly confidential.
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC participants.
  • Refs participant, according to clinic‑established protocols.
  • Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  • May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding's peer counseling through projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED with a demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing.
  • Breastfed at least one baby six months or more (does not need to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Meets the WIC demographic (mother of children under the age of five).
  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other parents enjoy a positive experience.
  • Communicates in a professional manner in written and spoken interactions with colleagues and participants.
  • Uses texting platform to create and respond to messages sometimes outside of normal business hours.
  • Basic technology skills and comfort with standard office computer use, telephone texting, and tele‑conferencing (Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Basic video recording and editing skills using social media to promote and support breastfeeding.

Must be able to pass a criminal history check and possess or obtain an Oregon driver’s license with an acceptable driving record that meets the County’s requirements.

This is a non‑supervisory position. Lead work and coordination of work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position may provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
