Job Summary:
This posting is for a pooled position. Application submissions for "[POOL]" positions are accepted on an ongoing basis to ensure a continuous and ready pool of qualified candidates for immediate review when the need arises. If/when a position becomes available, the College will review applications from this pool, and interview candidates whose qualifications best match the specific opening.
Applicants must reapply to the pool annually to maintain their active status in the pool.
Provides interpretation services to deaf and hearing-impaired students attending LBCC classes and activities.
Required Qualifications:
Applications are reviewed for minimum qualifications. In order to be considered, your application must clearly show you meet the minimum qualifications for this position.
Knowledge and
Skills:
* Requires strong proficiency in English and American sign language.
* Willingness to learn subject specific vocabulary as necessary for specific assignments.
Abilities:
* Must be able to independently perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively. Requires the ability and willingness to work in a variety of classroom settings/labs, on field trips, etc.
* Should have demonstrated ability to understand, comprehend, and interpret from lectures within various settings, including group activities.
* Must be able to communicate and work with people of diverse backgrounds in a respectful way.
* Must agree to follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Codes of Ethics.
Education and Experience:
* Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus completion of interpreter training program.
* One year educational interpreting experience preferred.
* Certification by National Registry of Interpreters for Deaf preferred.
* Proficiency in Signed Exact English (SEE) desirable.

Skills and Abilities:
Considerable learned physical skill is required to perform sign language. Certain coordinated finger, limb or body movement must be performed routinely in the course of regular work. Extended standing or sitting required.
Working Conditions:
Most interpreting situations occur in a classroom setting. Some duties may occur during field trips, club activities and evening and weekend performances and activities.
Essential Duties:
* Interprets classes, discussions, meetings, advising sessions, and college sponsored activities for deaf and hearing impaired students in the language mode used by the student - American sign language, oral (lip reading) modes, pidgin English or Sign Exact English (SEE). Voices as appropriate so student will be able to participate in classes or activities.
* Advises the Disability Services Coordinator (or Faculty/Staff working with hearing impaired students) of any changes or problems involving the assigned students.
* Treats students in a manner that contributes to increased self esteem and the development of effective self advocacy skills.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
