Responsibilities
Provide interpretation services to deaf and hearing‑impaired students attending LBCC classes and activities.
- Interpret classes, discussions, meetings, advising sessions, and college‑sponsored activities for deaf and hearing‑impaired students in the language mode used by the student – American Sign Language, oral (lip‑reading) modes, pidgin English or Sign Exact English (SEE). Voice as appropriate to enable student participation.
- Advise the Disability Services Coordinator or faculty/staff working with hearing‑impaired students of any changes or problems involving assigned students.
- Treat students in a manner that contributes to increased self‑esteem and the development of effective self‑advocacy skills.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Sign language requires considerable learned physical skill. Moderate standing or sitting is required, and coordinated finger, limb or body movement must be performed routinely.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent plus completion of an interpreter training program.
- One year of educational interpreting experience preferred.
- Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf preferred.
- Proficiency in Signed Exact English (SEE) desirable.
- Strong proficiency in English and American Sign Language.
- Willingness to learn subject‑specific vocabulary as needed for assignments.
- Ability to independently perform duties efficiently and effectively in a variety of settings.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, comprehend, and interpret lectures within diverse settings, including group activities.
- Ability to communicate and work with people from diverse backgrounds respectfully.
- Agreement to follow the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Codes of Ethics.
Criminal background check – C4 required.
