Position Summary
The Recycling Center Lead Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at a landfill for the purpose of transferring, spreading, covering, loading, and/or compacting recycling in an efficient and safe manner. The Lead Heavy Equipment Operator also coordinates the activities of Equipment Operators.
Principal Responsibilities- Perform pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment in accordance with company policy to ensure windows, lights, mirrors, and rear‑view camera are clean.
- Safely and efficiently operate equipment, including forklift, excavator, bulldozer, front‑end loader, and other machinery using proper safety standards.
- Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable materials.
- Continuously monitor the condition of equipment to ensure it is operationally ready at all times, minimizing downtime; clean tracks or wheels on equipment as needed.
- Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to the maintenance shop for repair.
- Complete Equipment Condition Reports and other required reports; report any necessary repairs to supervisor.
- Follow and enforce all required safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure that the shop is clean, serviced, and stored at the completion of each shift.
- Train or assist in training new employees.
- Study production schedules and estimate hour requirements for completion of job assignments.
- Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality.
- Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
- Direct employees in completion of work.
- Interpret instructions, specifications, blueprints, or job orders to employees and assign duties.
- Coordinate activities of individual departments or shifts in consultation with supervisor or manager.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Good customer service skills to meet and exceed customer expectations; acts in a professional, courteous, and cooperative manner toward customers and co‑workers; works with a sense of honesty and trustworthiness.
- Good time‑management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed efficiently and safely.
- Good follow‑through ability; adheres to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise.
- Ability to adhere to company policies and rules, promotes the company’s safety standards, and refrains from taking inappropriate risks.
- Maintains a sense of pride in work and strives to achieve all goals.
- Mechanical, equipment, or trade‑school certificate or training.
- Prior supervisory or lead experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience in equipment operation.
- Minimum of 1 year of prior experience working at sites regulated by OSHA.
