The Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments (OCWCOG) is a local intergovernmental agency serving Linn, Benton, and Lincoln Counties. Located in the Willamette Valley and the Central Oregon Coast, the rugged seacoast, high mountain passes of the Cascades, lush greenery, and the agricultural abundance of the Valley are an attractive addition to an education, employment, and cultural hub. The region is home to Oregon State University and just under two hours from popular skiing and hiking destinations of Portland and Bend.
The VISTA member will help build capacity for a new exciting pilot program at OCWCOG, the Stand By Me-Oregon ($BM) Program, which combats systemic and episodic poverty. A financial empowerment program, $BM utilizes trained community coaches to help clients set goals around budgeting, debt, savings, and credit. In this assignment the member will be responsible for recruiting financial coaches, helping to build training curriculum, expanding fundraising efforts, engaging and networking with local community partners, and designing program data and evaluation systems.
A priority will be made for outreach to Spanish and English-speaking clients; our current client base is 24% Latino, female, with low to moderate incomes. Come, join us, and build capacity for this exciting pilot which has seen a 40% client referral uptick in the last six months. OCWCOG is recognized as an Area Agency on Aging, an Economic Development District, a U.S. Department of Agriculture Revolving Loan Agency, and staffs two Metropolitan Planning Organizations in the region.
These designations increase OCWCOG’s ability to serve our communities’ needs, and also ensures that the VISTA member will be trained by one of the largest PERS-covered employers in the region with a variety of projects under its umbrella with which to learn, network and build a career of service.
