Salary Grade: 17

Salary Rate: Starting annual salary is $26,744.50 for a 247‑day contract, includes comprehensive benefits.

Job Summary

Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations for science courses taught at the Corvallis campus. Collaborates closely with science faculty to support their instructional needs; ensures proper storage of chemicals and scientific equipment. Develops and implements procedures for hazardous waste/materials and chemical management, maintains an inventory of equipment, and carries out other duties associated with safety and learning environment.

Duties
  • Prepares all materials for laboratory experiments and lecture demonstrations, and correctly sets up laboratory apparatus and chemicals. Collaborates closely with science faculty to meet their instructional needs and support student learning.
  • Updates laboratory setup sheets regularly to reflect changes in equipment and procedures, and provides advice to laboratory instructors in lab execution. Uses instructor feedback to modify setup sheets to meet instructional needs.
  • Coordinates with other instructional specialists in the division on the Albany campus to determine equipment needs for the Corvallis campus and transports equipment when needed.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and safe condition by storing chemicals properly, regularly cleaning, repairing broken equipment, and returning all materials to their proper place. Regularly checks and maintains chemical spill kits, eyewash fountains, safety showers, fire blankets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, scientific equipment, and other items.
  • Collaborates with instructional specialists on hazardous waste and chemical management procedures, conducts monthly inventory of hazardous/general waste and annually inventories the chemical supply, researches disposal guidelines, and stays current with regulations (DEQ, OSHA). Maintains professional rapport with the college Safety Coordinator.
  • Works with Albany campus specialists to purchase supplies and equipment, locates suppliers, obtains price quotes, prepares purchase orders for approval by the department chair.
  • Monitors laboratory and lecture rooms used by science faculty, performs end‑of‑term inspections, expedites maintenance and repairs, and follows up with facilities department.
  • Inventories materials in storage areas, maintains records, and arranges disposal of items no longer required.
  • Prepares and delivers reports at department meetings on equipment status, inventory, recommended purchases, and other relevant information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

    Physical

    Skills and Abilities:

    Physical ability to stand for extended periods; lift and transport scientific equipment up to 40 pounds. Requires hand, arm, and finger dexterity, normal hearing, speaking, and visual acuity. Seventy percent or more of duties require standing.

    Working Conditions: Work performed in college labs and stockroom with frequent contact with people. Considerable exposure to safety or health hazards. May work after hours or weekends. Position requires a personal vehicle to transport materials between Albany and Corvallis campuses.

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physical science, geoscience, or a closely related discipline.

    OR

    Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, physical science, geoscience, or a closely related discipline plus two years of work experience preparing and managing materials in a scientific laboratory.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Skills:

    Knowledge of laboratory management and common equipment used in science courses, including physics, geoscience, and biology. Requires good organizational skills, inventory maintenance, collaboration, problem solving, and strong communication skills.

    Abilities: Ability to independently perform duties efficiently and effectively, work with others, organize and manage a laboratory, solve problems, communicate orally and in writing, and work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.
