Overview

The Residential Counselor is responsible for overseeing clients’ behavior and assisting clients in the completion of necessary tasks. The role involves reminding residents to complete tasks and attend scheduled appointments, monitoring resident behavior, preparing meals, and carrying out light chores within the facility. The Residential Counselor provides emotional support and encouragement to residents and reports activity and behavior to the Clinical Team.

The position serves as a model to children and adolescents while providing direct care and basic need services to consumers challenged with behavioral, mental illness, and substance abuse issues. In a secured PRTF (Psychiatric Residential Facility), the Residential Counselor supervises consumers while maintaining a therapeutic milieu and supports the consumer’s person-centered plan.

Responsibilities
  • Receive, read, and be familiar with the Policies and Procedures of Premier Service of Carolina, Inc.
  • Apply required knowledge, skills, abilities, and specific consumer competencies in daily work.
  • Know basic principles of MH/SA/DD diagnoses and work with individuals with diverse abilities, ages, economic statuses, and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate empathy and understanding of consumer problems; assess consumer needs and engage with and build rapport with the person served.
  • Become familiar with and implement the individual’s PCP to address identified goals according to the service definition.
  • Document the service provided in progress notes, including observations, consumer participation, progress, behavior changes, and other pertinent information; complete documentation by the end of each shift.
  • Submit all required documentation by deadlines specified by the Supervisor.
  • Obtain and maintain current training required by the agency, aligned with the service provided and individual needs.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and consumer conferences or provide advance notice to the Supervisor if unable to attend.
  • Receive supervision from a Supervisor/Qualified Professional (QP) at least quarterly and as needed (face-to-face, via phone, or group meetings); supervises are overseen by a Qualified Professional in accordance with applicable licensure or certification requirements.
  • Work only during authorized hours unless specifically approved in advance by the Supervisor/Administrator.
  • Report changes in a person’s condition, family situation, or needs to the Supervisor.
  • Report any allegation of consumer abuse, neglect, or exploitation to the Supervisor, with an incident report and local DSS report as required.
  • Report destruction or theft of agency property to the Supervisor.
  • Report any possible fraud against the consumer or agency to the Supervisor for investigation.
  • Supervise and monitor consumers in residential and school settings; assist with daily living skills, such as prompting to complete daily hygiene, chores, and homework.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or Equivalent
  • Flexibility to work any shift
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and skills in educating clients in daily living skills
  • Observation and decision-making skills
  • Experience in implementing group activities is helpful
  • Knowledge of substance abuse/addiction issues or related work experience is beneficial
  • Must have a criminal record check and a healthcare registry check; OIG as required per 10A NCAC 27G.0200
  • If providing transportation, must have a North Carolina or other valid driver’s license, a safe driving record, and acceptable automobile liability insurance
  • Must be capable of passing a pre-employment drug screen and TB skin test
Training and Competency Requirements
  • Successful completion of mandatory Training/Skills refresher training, including:
  • First Aid/CPR
  • EBPI
  • Bloodborne Pathogens/Infectious Disease
  • HIPAA/Client Rights/Confidentiality
  • Core Competencies
  • General Organizational Orientation Training for MH/DD/SA needs as specified in the treatment/habilitation plan
  • Other training as indicated
  • Note:

    Some training requirements may be satisfied by level of competency through professional education, licensure, and continuing education; subject to review and approval by the state, LME, and/or Premier Service of Carolina, Inc.
Work Environment

This job involves duties in a facility-based setting with potential exposure to cigarette smoke, domestic animals/pets, pests, variable heating/cooling, and other conditions related to the domestic service location.
