Overview of the facility includes 109 licensed beds and not a teaching hospital. There is no trauma designation, but it is an advanced primary stroke center. The unit has 27 beds with an average census of 20 patients. Patient types and common diagnoses include stroke, COPD, chest pain, altered mental status, and GI bleed. Patient ratios are 1:5-6, dependent on acuity, with surge staffing potentially increasing ratios up to 1:7-8.
Skills required include stroke experience and NIH assessments, chest tube management, PIV starts, tracheostomy care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, NGT placement, and drain/tube management. PCA pump and medication drip management skills are also needed, including cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and IV fluids. Support within the department includes CNAs who can insert foleys and remove IVs if certified, along with providing vital signs and activities of daily living.
Telemetry monitoring and technical support are available 24/7. The technology and equipment used includes Epic for EMR, Alaris for IV pumps, and Philips monitors. Unit culture is positive and team-driven.
