Correctional Sergeant I (S)
Reporting to the Correctional Lieutenant I, this position will be responsible for assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Overseeing officers' activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
- Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Ensuring staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.
- Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders.
- Giving direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies.
- Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s).
- Responding to emergencies, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders.
- Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
- Investigating and acting, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
- Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
- Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
- Conducting staff briefing sessions.
- Performing other related duties as required.
Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

Qualifications:
MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
To be considered for a Correctional Sergeant I position, ALL applicants must :
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G.0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver's license

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Brown Creek Correctional Institution is located in Polkton, North Carolina and houses up to 916 male offenders in a minimum custody facility.
