Description of WorkThis posting is for two Transportation Worker III (S) positions in the Division 10 Roadside Environmental Unit. The primary duties focus on managing vegetation along NCDOT right‑of‑way areas and related maintenance.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Managing vegetation using herbicides, seeding/mulching, erosion control, plant bed, and wildflower maintenance.
- Installing erosion control, mowing, and maintaining plant material along NCDOT rights‑of‑way.
- Operating, inspecting, and maintaining equipment such as trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blowers, hand and power tools.
- Working in all weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes; subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and extreme weather or other adverse circumstances.
Safety toe shoes required.
Qualifications & RequirementsDriver’s License
- Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days.
- Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire or obtain one within 360 days through on‑the‑job training.
- Meet the following standards:
- No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years.
- No convictions of alcohol or drug related traffic offenses within the past five years.
- Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (employees residing in adjacent states may operate using a valid appropriate driver’s license from their state of residence).
- If applicant has previously held an out‑of‑state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved must be obtained; applicant is responsible for providing driving records.
Pre‑employment drug testing required. Release form and background statement must be completed and signed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of vegetation management including shrubs, trees, and fertilizer using sound horticultural practices.
- Experience applying herbicides to control weeds and brush.
- Experience with at least one of the following equipment: asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, hyrodseeder, skid steer.
- Knowledge of proper labeling, storage, and disposal of herbicides and pesticides.
- Experience operating pesticide applicator trucks, tractors, and utility vehicles.
High school or GED diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. See the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide for details.

Salary Range: $35,596 – $62,294
