Job Purpose
The Nurse, Occupational Health, serves Progress Rail Corporation, a Caterpillar Company, globally by providing occupational health services, injury and illness management, and clinical guidance. The RN supports facilities, managers, supervisors, and employees by ensuring regulatory compliance, effective case management, and safe return‑to‑work outcomes. This role exercises independent clinical judgment and performs both clinical and administrative functions within the Health Services group.
Key Responsibilities- Provide injury and illness triage, including phone and onsite consultation.
- Serve as initial clinical point of contact with injured employees, supervisors, medical providers, TPAs, and other stakeholders.
- Obtain and document history of present injury, mechanism of injury, job function impact, and relevant medical history.
- Evaluate injuries against current job functions and determine appropriate level of care.
- Provide guidance regarding first aid, self‑care, and escalation of care when required.
- Coordinate and provide clinical case management for work‑related and personal medical conditions.
- Manage Workers’ Compensation, Short‑Term Disability, and FMLA cases.
- Coordinate return‑to‑work clearances including ADA accommodation requests.
- Maintain, review, and record OSHA 300 logs.
- Conduct or oversee pre‑employment, post‑offer, and annual physicals; hearing and vision screenings; health assessments and medical surveillance programs; coordinate health fairs, wellness programs, blood borne pathogen programs, and AED/first aid/CPR initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and confidential medical records using EMR systems.
- Order and manage medical supplies.
- Function as onsite nurse for assigned facilities.
- Interact collaboratively with Human Resources, Health & Safety staff, medical providers, and other designated personnel.
- Participate in Health Services meetings, projects, and initiatives.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Provide clinical guidance related to complex or high‑risk cases.
- Support cross‑facility and multi‑site occupational health initiatives.
- Assist in trend analysis and reporting related to injuries, illnesses, and medical surveillance.
- Participate in audits, regulatory inquiries, and compliance reviews.
- Serve as a clinical resource for occupational health policy interpretation and implementation.
- Degree in Nursing required.
- Current, active nursing license.
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
- Minimum of 1–3 years occupational health experience preferred.
- Workers’ Compensation and case management experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of Workers’ Compensation, Short‑Term Disability, FMLA, and ADA.
- Experience working with EMR systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Sense of urgency, responsiveness, and timeliness.
- Ability to work independently and always maintain confidentiality.
- Energetic interpersonal skills and a professional presence.
- Strong analytical and technical skills.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Multi‑site or manufacturing environment experience.
- Experience supporting wellness and prevention programs.
- Strength:
Perform clinical and administrative duties; may require light lifting of medical supplies. - Motion:
Combination of desk work, walking plant floors, standing, and occasional bending or kneeling. - Vision/Hearing:
Extended computer use; ability to communicate verbally in office and production settings; exposure to production noise. - Work Environment:
Office, clinic, and industrial environments; exposure to temperature variations, production noise, and hazardous materials. - Emotional Demands:
High level of responsibility; must make timely clinical decisions; frequent interaction with injured employees and leadership. - Safety:
Strict compliance with safety rules and use of PPE, including safety glasses, hard hats, metatarsal boots, gloves, and hearing protection when working in production areas.
