Position: Quality Control Technician - Plastics Testing (2nd Shift)

Quality Control Technician

We are seeking a Quality Control Technician to join our team within our A2LA-accredited plastics testing laboratory on 2nd shift. This role focuses heavily on the mechanical, physical, and the evaluation of plastic resins, compounded pellets, and extruded products.

As a key member of the quality team, you will ensure our testing complies with ISO/IEC 17025 standards and relevant ASTM/ISO plastic testing methods. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with polymer testing instrumentation, material traceability, and the rigorous documentation required to maintain our laboratory's accredited status. Pay:
Starting @ $21.00 per hour + Shift Differential (WE PAY FOR EXPERIENCE!)

Hours:

2nd Shift / 2:30PM - 11:00PM

Days:
Monday through Friday, occasional Saturday OT

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs standard tests on assigned product line production batches and on some incoming raw materials as needed, ensuring the meeting of Avient and the customer's specifications.
  • Polymer & Materials Testing:
    Perform routine and non-routine testing on plastic resins, compounded pellets, extruded pellets and include the following Core testing methods:
    • Melt Flow Rate (MFR / MFI)
    • Density and Specific Gravity
    • Moisture analysis
    • Mechanical properties (Tensile, Flexural Modulus, and Izod Impact strength)
    • Ash content
  • A2LA & ISO/IEC 17025 Compliance:
    Maintain strict data integrity, sample traceability, and comprehensive laboratory notebooks. Ensure all testing aligns with the lab's Scope of Accreditation and assist with internal audits and annual A2LA assessments.
  • Equipment Verification & Calibration:
    Perform daily verifications and routine calibrations on critical laboratory hardware (e.g., melt indexers, tensile testers, extrusion tooling gauges, and scales).
  • Root Cause & CAPA Support:
    Document material non-conformances. Work closely with compounding, extrusion, and quality to perform root-cause investigations and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Acts as a technical resource to production addressing issues related to production batches.
  • Recommends to production and may develop adjustments to batches to meet specifications.
  • Records test results in SAP. Maintains reference files.
  • Completes and maintains all required paperwork, records, documents, etc.
  • Ensures all gauges and test equipment are verified.
  • May participate in investigations of complaints and corrective actions as needed.
  • Follows and complies with all safety and work rules and regulations. Maintains departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Completes and sends documentation to customers (i.e. COA).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical/Environ. Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk and/or hear. Occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally handle up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities may be required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Requires the use of safety equipment as dictated by the work area such as safety glasses and shoes, dust mask, hard hat, respirator, face shield, hearing protection, chemical suit, gloves, aprons, etc. Work is inside and the typical noise level fluctuates from moderate to loud. Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is Occasionally exposed to vibration.

The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Equipment Familiarity:
    Direct experience operating plastic testing equipment (e.g., Melt Flow Indexers, moisture analyzers)
  • Standards Knowledge:
    Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory standards and standard plastics test methods (ASTM and/or ISO).
  • Documentation:
    Proven track record of meticulous technical record-keeping and adhering to data integrity principles.
