Teaching Assistant

Minimum qualifications include:

• High school diploma or GED; and
• Two (2) years of child development or formal childcare experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
• Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from the date of hire.
• Possession of a 45-hour entry-level course or an approved three-credit early care and education course, or an equivalent approved by the department, prior to or within six (6) months from the date of hire. The employee will pay for the course.
• Possession of a valid CPR certificate within six (6) months from the date of hire.
• Possession of a valid First Aid certificate within six (6) months from the date of hire.
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred.
• Child Development Associate (CDA) preschool/infant-toddler certification is preferred.

The role requires knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of child development and growth
• Methods and techniques of developing educational programs
• Potential health problems and signs of child abuse and/or neglect
• Principles and procedures used in administering first aid treatment
• Pertinent health and safety standards governing child development centers
• Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting

The responsibilities include:

• Review and evaluate the effectiveness of child development activities
• Develop and implement appropriate child development activities to enhance social, emotional, and cognitive abilities
• Conduct emergency evacuation procedures
• Provide a safe and healthy learning environment
• Maintain a clean and healthy learning environment
• Detect potential health hazards or child abuse in children
• Maintain accurate and complete records of child development activities
• Communicate clearly and concisely
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and parents
• Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
