Position Summary
UNM Neurology seeks a Neurodevelopmental Disabilities specialist to join our Child Neurology team and help lead efforts in New Mexico to improve the care of children and adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The position will be part of a team of faculty providing quality patient care in the inpatient and outpatient setting at UNM Hospital and will help lead the Continuum of Care clinic in coordination with UNM Pediatrics.
The Continuum of Care clinic is a state-funded clinic designed to facilitate proper care during transition to adulthood for patients with developmental disabilities. Adult or Child Neurologists interested in neurodevelopmental disabilities or transitions of care are also encouraged to apply.
Clinical responsibilities include the following:
- Outpatient management of adults and children with neurodevelopmental disabilities
- Participation in rural outreach clinics
Additional clinical opportunities available based on interest and qualifications:
- Inpatient coverage/call on child neurology consult service
- General child neurology or specialty clinics
- Inpatient/outpatient EEG coverage
- Participation in multidisciplinary clinics including cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
Non-clinical responsibilities may include the following:
- Administration of clinical programs at the Continuum of Care clinic
- Long‑term planning/strategy based on state needs and participating in state level committees
- Building multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care and access to care
- Recruiting additional NDD faculty
- Laying the groundwork for a future NDD fellowship
- Collaborating on statewide education efforts in relation to neurodevelopmental disabilities
- Serving as PI on the state grant which funds the Continuum of Care program
Academic responsibilities include participation in teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. Research responsibilities include collaborating with researchers within and outside the department. Opportunities for pilot funding are available to build out your own research in the future.
UNM Hospital is the tertiary care center for the State and the only NAEC level 4 epilepsy center, and ALS / MDA center and comprehensive movement disorder center in the State. The UNM Neurology Department has 35 full-time and part-time attending physicians and is home to well-established Residency and multiple Fellowship programs. The child neurology division has six full-time faculty, one part‑time faculty, and a nurse practitioner.
Our child neurology residency currently accepts two residents per year.

Minimum Requirements
- MD Degree or equivalent
- Board certified/eligible in Neurology or Neurology with special qualification in Child Neurology
- Eligible for Medical license in the state of New Mexico
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
- Board certified/eligible in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD)
- 2–3 years of clinical experience in Neurodevelopmental disabilities
