Position SummaryThe Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a Health Communication Assistant Professor to begin in August 10, 2026. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position in Health Communication. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by November 15, 2025.
We welcome applicants with a research program that advances theory and practice in health communication, with strengths that complement our department, college, and university. Health Communication is an important area for the department and the university, including its Health Science Center and the Healthcare Workforce Expansion Initiative. We welcome a wide range of expertise, and are particularly interested in research that is consistent with our departmental commitment to understanding the complex relationship between communication and health, including within our unique Southwest and borderland context.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong record of research in Health Communication, teach courses each semester, supervise MA and PhD students and serve the department, college, university, and the field.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate in communication or a related field by August 10, 2026
- Coursework, teaching experience, and/or research in health communication
Preferred Qualifications:
- Potential to establish national or international research reputation in Health Communication
- Strength in undergraduate teaching
- Potential to mentor students at the graduate level
- Potential to contribute to Strategic Communication undergraduate area in the department
- Potential to teach quantitative research methods courses at the graduate level
- Interest in curriculum development
- Potential for leading or participating in funded research
- Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
