Position Overview

The Access Services Department in the University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (CULLS) seeks motivated and highly engaged student employees interested in a challenging and dynamic customer service work environment. Library Assistants are the first point of contact most patrons have with the University Libraries system and take care of most of the day‑to‑day duties associated with library operations.

Student positions may be based in Centennial Science & Engineering Library, the Fine Arts & Design Library, or Zimmerman Library.

Under direct supervision, Library Assistants work with University Libraries staff and student employees in a team environment to:

  • Learn and apply library and campus policies and procedures.
  • Assist student, faculty, and community patrons with discovering and using a variety of library materials.
  • Help University and community patrons access library resources including circulating material, study rooms, and the Library’s computing and printing environment.
  • Assist library staff with opening and/or closing University Libraries facilities and ensuring the libraries remain a welcoming and comfortable destination for UNM students, faculty, and members of the public.
  • Shelve library materials and ensure that collections are well‑organized and accessible through regular stack maintenance tasks.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity for progressively independent work and increased responsibility within a collegial team environment.

Benefits of this position include: learning research skills that support college academic work; receiving guidance and mentoring from library staff; and developing professional skills such as interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem‑solving.

CULLS student employees are employed on a term basis for the current academic year. Student employees may be asked to work nights and/or weekends. Library student employees must be able to shelve books and perform other physical activities as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled at UNM for a minimum of 6 credit hours during the normal school year.
  • Currently enrolled at UNM for a minimum of 3 credit hours during the summer semester.
  • Current Work Study award.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively.
