Program Specialist

Reporting to the Student CARE Coordinator, this position promotes student wellbeing, safety and security by working with campus stakeholders to address student support, concerns, and behavior. The role collaborates with campus partners including UNM Police, Office of University Council, Student Health and Counseling, Emergency Management, Compliance Ethics and Equal Opportunity, Dean of Students, Student Affairs departments, and other staff and faculty as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the Campus Assessment Response Education (CARE) Team, planning, coordinating, and hosting bi‑weekly CARE meetings with campus partners.
  • Gather and assess data from diverse sources such as incident reports, security personnel, academic staff, Student Affairs personnel, and other relevant parties to form a thorough student case conceptualization.
  • Follow industry standards to evaluate reports appropriately, create follow‑up actions, and facilitate case management and documentation regarding student cases.
  • Oversee a caseload of Student CARE cases, create CARE Actions, provide follow‑up and support students, staff, and faculty in navigating University processes and procedures.
  • Facilitate effective communication and information sharing among team members and other relevant stakeholders, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to privacy regulations.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of student CARE cases, documenting the team’s actions, decisions, and follow‑up activities.
  • May serve as a Respondent Support Specialist working with respondents in Title IX cases through the Compliance Ethics and Equal Opportunity Office.
  • Plan, coordinate, promote, and provide training, promotional events and programs to educate students, staff, and faculty on supporting and addressing student behaviors and concerns.
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Perform job‑related duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas must be in compliance with the University’s influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Those located at the UNM Children’s Campus must pass a comprehensive post‑offer, pre‑employment criminal and New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) fingerprint background check; ongoing status will be verified by periodic background checks.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, higher education, college student affairs, or related fields.
  • Direct experience in case management, social work, counseling, residence life and on‑campus student housing, student conduct, or student affairs is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a member of a Behavioral Intervention Team or CARE Team assisting students in a university setting.
  • Familiarity with legal issues impacting students, staff and faculty at a university.
  • Familiarity with higher education case management systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience in case management, risk management, or crisis intervention.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact and empathy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and handle high‑pressure situations calmly and professionally.
  • Knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory requirements related to threat assessment and campus safety.
  • Familiarity with emergency response protocols and crisis management procedures.
  • Leadership and team management skills to guide a multidisciplinary group of professionals.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
