Temp Parttime Faculty‑Native Amer Stds
The University of New Mexico invites applications for a part-time instructor position in the Department of Native American Studies. The part-time instructor will teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in‑person and online on a semester‑by‑semester basis. Part‑time instructors need to be knowledgeable on a variety of Native American Studies topics and subjects such as education, sovereignty, self‑determination, philosophy, Native Nation building/Indigenous community building, history, law, and/or related areas.
They will be paid for each course taught in the semester and payment will follow standard rates in the College of Arts & Sciences. We anticipate hiring Adjunct Faculty to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters.
Anticipated openings will be for Adjuncts who can teach courses in a broad range of subject areas, including but not limited to the subject areas covered in the following UNM courses:
- NATV 1150 Introduction in Native American Studies
- NATV 2110 Socio‑Political Concepts in Native America
- NATV 2315 Indigenous Language Revitalization and Community Renewal
- NATV 2140 Research Issues in Native America
- NATV 326 Tribal Gaming
- NATV 436 Environmental Ethics and Justice in Native America
- NATV 305 Indigenous Self‑Determination in Education

Applying Traditions of Native American Philosophy
The Department of Native American Studies (NAS) is an interdisciplinary academic department committed to Indigenous academic scholarship and research excellence. The department currently offers a Ph.D., M.A., B.A., and a minor degree. NAS’s mission is to excel in educating all students and the public about the Native experience of Indigenous peoples, emphasizing our complex history and intercultural heritage of New Mexico and the United States.
A second goal is building a department that collaborates with Native communities and engages students in Native Nation/Indigenous community building.
Positions are contingent upon need each semester as determined by student enrollment levels, courses on the current course schedule, and demand driven by graduation requirements. Positions may be filled or eliminated each semester up to the deadline for students to drop or add courses. Candidates who are selected for these positions will report to the Chair of the Department of Native American Studies.

- Fall 2026 semester – June 15, 2026
- Spring 2026 semester – November 15, 2026
- Master's Degree or higher in Native American Studies/American Indian Studies/Indigenous Studies or subfield for which you are applying;
- Master's Degree or higher in a field other than Native American Studies/American Indian Studies/Indigenous Studies that is related to the position for which you are applying;
- Successful completion of at least 18 graduate credit hours in an accredited program in the discipline or subfield for which you are applying (i.e. BA or BS degree for example)
- Two years professional experience in the specialization or subfield
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to the Native American Studies Undergraduate and Graduate programs; and mentor diverse students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels
- Experience and/or commitment to teaching excellence at graduate and undergraduate levels
- Successful teaching experience in a post‑secondary institution
- A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
