Position Summary
CTL Student Learning Assistance is a program available to UNM students enrolled in undergraduate classes. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL, formerly CAPS) is looking to hire new tutors to support Math and Science classes in our drop‑in center starting in Fall 2026. CTL’s mission is to make learning more accessible for everyone on UNM’s campus by providing services that meet the needs of all Lobos.
As a tutor, you will support your fellow Lobos while developing your own content mastery and tutoring skills. Each semester, CTL tutors earn accreditation through the nationally recognized College Reading and Learning Association.
We seek students who have done well in their classes and are excited about helping peers. Prior tutoring experience is appreciated but not required. Applicants should have received a B+ or higher in the classes they wish to tutor, though a B or lower is acceptable if the applicant has demonstrated significant growth in higher‑level courses. We most commonly support Math, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Preference will be given to students with work study, but all students can be hired by CTL. CTL is especially interested in hiring students who can tutor STEM subjects in Spanish.
While a few online shifts may be available, tutors must work the majority of their hours in person. Tutors are expected to have taken at least two semesters in the courses they are tutoring.
Responsibilities- Provide peer‑centered tutoring in math and science courses to UNM students in the drop‑in center.
- Support students with coursework, problem solving, and review of class materials.
- Work majority of hours in person; limited online shifts may be available.
- Assist students in the subjects listed below.
- Undergraduate student eligible for campus employment.
- Earned a B+ or higher (or equivalent demonstrated growth) in courses you wish to tutor and completed at least two semesters in those courses.
- Work‑study status is preferred but not required.
- Preferred experience:
prior tutoring, coursework in statistics. - Math: Ability to tutor Calculus II and all lower‑level math courses;
Calculus III and upper‑level math preferred. - Physics: Ability to tutor Calculus‑Based Physics II and comfort teaching lower‑level math related to physics.
- Chemistry: Ability to tutor Chem 1215, Chem 1225, and Chem 301;
Chem 302 and Biology tutoring preferred. - Biology: Ability to tutor standard biology courses;
Spanish tutoring preferred where offered.
