The Department of Art is seeking a full-time tenure track assistant professor in art education whose scholarship is rooted in art education teacher preparation, new media, and contemporary inquiry-driven pedagogies. The ideal candidate should be able to teach art education courses for Prek-12th grade art teacher preparation and new media art education as well as mentoring graduate students. The art education assistant professor will be part of the art education program within the Department of Art, a unit in the College of Fine Arts.

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about teaching preservice art education students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The teaching load is two courses per semester (2/2), which often includes field observations. On-going scholarship and service is expected, concurrent with the teaching load.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a Research 1 institution that offers support for faculty research. The University of New Mexico's Art Education program is the only visual art teacher Prek-12th grade licensures program in New Mexico. The program offers BA and MA degrees with or without a New Mexico art teaching license and is grounded in interweaving theory and practice through experiential learning, artmaking as inquiry, and cultivating interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches.

The University of New Mexico's Department of Art is part of the College of Fine Arts, whose internationally recognized programs, faculty, and staff provide a comprehensive education in both the visual and the performing arts. The Department of Art offers B.A., M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Art Education or a related field.
• Consideration will be given to ABD candidates who will complete their degree before the start of the contract.
• 3-5 years of Prek-12th grade visual arts teaching experience.
• Scholarly practice and/or active exhibition in art education.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years cumulative university-level experience as instructor of record.
• Expertise and ability to teach PreK-12 grade art teacher preparation and supervision.
• Proficiency in the teaching of new media (technology, digital arts, etc.).
• Ability to provide mentorship to graduate students.
• Excellent communication skills and a commitment to working collaboratively.
• A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
• Conversant in contemporary art education issues pertaining to critical inquiry and interdisciplinary education.
