Position Summary
The Department of Dental Medicine's Division of Dental Hygiene has an exciting opportunity for an experienced full-time Academic Advisor. As an important member the Academic Advisor will directly provide day-to-day support to the Dental Hygiene Program.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in an academic or healthcare administrative environment and will demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities independently while maintaining a high level of organization, discretion, and professionalism. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to anticipate program and student needs are essential.
The Academic Advisor must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive student and institutional information.
Responsibilities- Participate in and conduct academic advising sessions for Dental Hygiene students, including one-on-one meetings related to academic planning, progression, performance concerns, and graduation requirements.
- Assist students in navigating academic policies, procedures, and program requirements specific to the Dental Hygiene curriculum.
- Maintain accurate advising records and documentation related to student consultations, academic plans, and referrals.
- Support student recruitment efforts, including participation in outreach activities, information sessions, and recruitment events.
- Assist with onboarding and orientation of newly admitted Dental Hygiene students, including preparation and delivery of orientation sessions and advising workshops.
- Provide ongoing support to students during key transition points throughout the program.
- Input routine data into databases and electronic tracking systems; complete forms and academic program documentation in accordance with established procedures.
- Assist in analyzing academic records and tracking student progress under the guidance of senior advising or administrative personnel.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.
- Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Previous administrative or academic advising experience in a higher education setting.
- Experience supporting health sciences, dental, or clinical education programs.
- Proficiency with Smartsheet, Microsoft Office Suite, or similar electronic tracking systems.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
- All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
