What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Intern - R&D Graduate Year-Round to join our team. We are looking for graduate students studying engineering, science, math, computer science, cybersecurity or related field with an interest in power systems.

Graduate year-round interns can expect to work in the area of electric power systems focused on exciting research problems in one or more of these areas:

* Power system simulation and modeling

* Capacity expansion planning

* Power system optimization

* Grid resilience

* Cybersecurity

* Power system protection

* Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning

* Data analytics

* Data center integration

* Power system dynamics

* Power system stability

* Electricity markets

* Controls

* Power distribution and transmission systems

* Energy storage systems

* Power system planning

* Black-start restoration

* Smart grid operations

* Natural hazard / threat modeling

* Geospatial science

* Wildfire science

On any given day, you may be called on to:

* Work with a mentor and a team of researchers for a specific project and task

* Perform valuable research and development to solve complex problems

* Gather and analyze data for electric power systems to help answer complex research questions

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

* Earned bachelor's degree

* Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

* Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

* Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

* U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.

Qualifications We Desire

* Pursuing a graduate degree in engineering, science, math, computer science, cybersecurity or related field

* Interest in and/or experience with electric power systems

* Experience coding or in software development

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision and ability to work in a team

About Our Team

The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid. This work includes the development of improved planning and operations methodologies from the bulk system down to end users. Our capabilities encompass the development and application of advanced algorithmic and computational methods, grid operations, economics, and policy. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support.

This department is highly inter-disciplinary, working collaboratively with universities, utilities, government agencies, and both national and international research organizations.
