What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a year‑round R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team! The Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML) within the Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories seeks qualified undergraduate interns to support research and development in chemistry, materials science and advanced manufacturing for a variety of national security customers. The position can support various activities at the AML including chemical/materials synthesis, characterization, testing, modeling, printing and additive manufacturing.
Our projects are truly multi‑disciplinary and require the successful candidate to work effectively in a dynamic research environment as a team member.
On any given day you will be called upon to support one of various technical programs including:
- Chemical synthesis, characterization and precursor development for materials science applications.
- Nanomaterials and ceramics for materials applications in extreme environments.
- Mechanical/electrical design, development and characterization of materials and processes for additive manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing techniques.
This internship at AML requires onsite work in Albuquerque, NM.
Salary RangeAt Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. QualificationsWe Require
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
- Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.
- Undergraduate school coursework in materials science, chemistry, electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering or other STEM field.
- Additional laboratory experience or coursework in chemistry, materials science, physics, or an engineering discipline is desirable.
- Experience with technical software for data collection and automated research, data processing, modeling, as well as digital preparation of reports/manuscripts, presentations, and posters.
- Mature oral and written communication skills are desired, as demonstrated by coursework or project assignments.

Security ClearanceThis position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre‑employment drug test and background review. Employees may need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Certain citizen ships may affect eligibility for a DOE security clearance.
