Position: SENIOR TECHNICAL ADVISOR (STA)

We are currently seeking a Senior Technical Advisor (STA) specializing in Nuclear Safety to support our team in Albuquerque and/or White Rock, NM.

Position Description

The Senior Technical Advisor (STA) supports the NA-ESH's independent oversight role to ensure Nuclear Explosive Safety (NES). This senior-level position provides advanced technical expertise to evaluate, improve, and oversee NES assessment processes and operations. The STA is responsible for conducting high-level assessments, delivering actionable recommendations, and ensuring full compliance with safety protocols for nuclear explosive activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • NES Process Evaluation and Improvement:
    • Evaluate and provide recommendations to enhance the NES assessment process.
    • Ensure compliance with established protocols for nuclear explosive safety.
  • Technical Support:
    • Participate in NES evaluations and studies, offering expertise in areas such as tooling design, explosive safety, environmental safety, and nuclear weapons assembly/disassembly.
    • Provide written reports detailing findings, recommendations, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Contribute to lines of inquiry and prepare technical input for NES studies.
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
    • Engage with stakeholders, including NA-12, CDNS, and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB), to discuss safety initiatives and improvements.
    • Support periodic and ad-hoc NES-related meetings and conference calls.
  • Travel and Documentation Review:
    • Travel to NNSA headquarters, national laboratories, and operational sites for evaluations.
    • Review detailed, often classified, input documents to prepare for NES evaluations.
    • Maintain necessary security clearances and access levels for classified work.
Essential Skills

• Experience handling and transporting high explosives, ordnance handling, and detonation systems.

• Safety assessment of high-consequence operations.

• Nuclear explosive and weapon surety, explosive safety, and tooling design.

• Electrostatic discharge protection, lightning protection, and human factors.

• Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and fire protection protocols.

• Facilities management, program analysis, and nuclear safety.

Strategic planning, program and project management, and risk assessment.

• Proficient in analyzing technical data and preparing recommendations, including dissenting opinions when warranted.

• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to document and present findings independently and objectively.

Qualifications
  • Education
    • Master's degree preferred; bachelor's degree required in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or Physics with a focus on nuclear studies, Materials Science, or Chemistry Experience.
  • Experience
    • 15+ years of senior-level experience in safety evaluations, high-consequence operations, or peer reviews.
  • Additional Requirements
    • Active DOE "Q" level Security Clearance and Sigma 15 access (or ability to obtain).
    • Frequent travel to various NNSA sites and facilities.
    • Participation in periodic NES-related meetings and conference calls.
    • Regular interaction with classified systems and materials.
    • Adherence to timelines and protocols as outlined by NNSA SD 452.2B.
    • A valid driver's license may be required for travel.
